David Dominique is a composer, performer, and music theorist based in Richmond, Virginia. He was awarded a 2022–2023 Guggenheim Fellowship and was a 2021–2022 fellow at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute. His work spans contemporary music, jazz, electroacoustic composition, rock, and theater. His albums Mask (2018) and Ritual (2013), written for a jazz octet including flute, strings, brass, guitar, drums, and electronics, received critical acclaim. He has performed this music in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington D.C., and more. Mask was co-produced by Nolan Shaheed, former colla- borator of Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, and others. David also writes for theater, including Starcrosser’s Cut (2013), based on astronaut Lisa Nowak, ac claimed in Los Angeles. He has composed for Tony Arnold, Talea Ensemble, ECCE, L’Arsenale, and Killsonic (an experimental LA-based collective), and has performed at festivals like Coachella and Bumbershoot. In 2016, he premiered Broken Record, a co-produced music-theater work in Los Angeles. His research explores Mingus, Dolphy, sonic chaos, and Beat Furrer, the focus of his doctoral thesis. He has presented his work at Harvard, Wellesley, Virginia Tech, among others. A recipient of many residencies (MacDowell, Yaddo, Djerassi...), he currently teaches at the College of William and Mary.
