Luther Gray

Luther Gray (b. 1972, New Orleans) is a Boston-based drummer whose work spans avant-garde jazz, modern improvisation, and punk/indie rock. Raised in Washington, D.C., he began in punk bands before studying at the University of Miami. Later he returned to D.C. to perform with artists such as Butch Warren, Cecil Payne, and Buck Hill while developing a deep personal study of free jazz and experimental music. Since relocating to Boston in 2000, he has become a central figure in the city’s creative music scene, collaborating extensively with musicians including Joe Morris, Taylor Ho Bynum, Jerry Bergonzi, Jim Hobbs, and George Garzone. He has also co-founded projects that fuse free jazz with indie rock, notably his band Lawnmower. Gray has performed and recorded worldwide with a wide range of leading improvisers—from Anthony Braxton and William Parker to Joe Lovano and Ken Vandermark—while maintaining an active presence in rock contexts as well. In addition to leading his own ensembles and long-running collaborations, he is a dedicated educator, teaching privately and working with institutions such as New England Conservatory, MIT, and Berklee, and is widely sought out for his expertise in advanced rhythmic and improvisational concepts.
