Glorb Organ Build Days

We're building something weird and large and beautiful, and we need hands.

Want to be part of building the set design for this July's Bombyx x Look Park collaboration? The Glorb Organ is a large-scale interactive LED sculpture installation that suggests bioluminescent alien organic forms and involves gesture-controlled lights and live performance infrastructure. In other words, we're building a lit stage set that audience members will get to "drive" at times with their own motion, dancing, and expression.

The Glorb Organ is a project by installation artist (and Florence Congregational pastor!) Marisa Egerstrom, aka Tender Fire Studio, She created the glowing flowers that were part of last year's Look Park performances.

Work days involve: paper mache clay, epoxy, sculptural fabrication. You will get things on you. We'll have plenty of nitrile gloves, and respirators if we do dangerous stuff. You'll see some demonstrations of the materials and technique and then get a feel for it. You will ask a question when you're stuck and then go do the thing. You'll get to point to a seriously cool thing in July and say "I helped build that!"

While doing art projects in a social setting is fun for everyone, for this project (on a deadline!) we're specifically looking for people who:

- Can follow directions and then run with them, by asking questions instead of assuming
- Are comfortable not knowing exactly what they're doing yet
- Enjoy the meditative focus of repetitive physical work
- Don't need constant check-ins to stay on task

- Do not have chemical sensitivities to PVA glues, joint compound, house paint, or epoxies

No specific skills required - some degree of manual coordination, patience with fiddly stuff, and curiosity are the whole prerequisite. If you've ever built anything, sewed anything, fixed anything, or stayed up too late on a project you cared about, you'll be fine. Wear clothes you don't mind ruining.

DATES: June 3, June 10, June 17, June 24, and July 1
TIME: 10 am - 2pm
LOCATION: Bombyx

Let us know when you're available by emailing Marisa at pastor@fccnorthampton.org, and we'll let you know what the projects are for each day are when we get closer to them!
